HARRISBURG – To reign in the overreach of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced his intention to introduce legislation that would eliminate the entity’s ability to exercise the power of eminent domain – citing growing concerns over reckless expansion plans that threaten private property rights and Pennsylvania’s natural heritage.
HARRISBURG – Continuing their mission to help Somerset County residents, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar’s (R-69) and Sen. Pat Stefano’s (R-32) efforts were successful in securing just over $12.58 million in grant and loan funding from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) to assist with Conemaugh Township Municipal Authority’s water quality project. Out of this allocation, $8.8 million is deemed a grant.

HARRISBURG – After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January, Corsa Coal is shutting down its operations in Somerset County. The company, along with its subsidiaries in Friedens, are laying off 332 employees in Pennsylvania, effective this Friday, April 4.

JEROME – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) joined state and local officials, veterans and community members to dedicate a bridge on East Campus Avenue over U.S. Route 219 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, in honor of Tec 5 Kenneth J. Newcomer.
WHAT: The bridge on East Campus Avenue over U.S. Route 219 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, will be designated as the Kenneth J. Newcomer Memorial Bridge. Newcomer, a Jerome native, was killed in action on Oct. 9, 1944, in Belgium.
CAIRNBROOK – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) joined state and local officials, veterans and community members to dedicate a bridge in honor of Seaman 1st Class Raymond Kozik, a Somerset County native who gave his life in service to his country during World War II. The bridge, carrying State Route 1016 (McGregor Avenue) over Dark Shade Creek in Shade Township, will now be known as the Seaman 1st Class Raymond Kozik Memorial Bridge.
WHAT: Rep. Carl Walker Metzger (R-Somerset) will lead a ceremony to unveil a sign designating the bridge on McGregor Avenue over Dark Shade Creek in Cairnbrook, Somerset County, in memory of Raymond Kozik. Kozik, a Cairnbrook native and seaman 1st class, was killed in action while serving in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945.
WHAT: The bridge on State Route 1015 over the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River in Allegheny Township, Somerset County, will be designated as the Staff Sergeant William Will Memorial Bridge. Will, a Glassport native, was killed in action during the Vietnam War on July 5, 1966.
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) announced, despite repeated opposition by the public, that the agency is entering into a four-year preliminary engineering stage for a project that would put a 1,000 foot cut through the Allegheny Mountain near the existing Turnpike tunnels.
