Metzgar Secures Crucial Commitment from DCNR

Agency to spray for spring moths and fall cankerworms
HARRISBURG – Witnessing the widespread defoliation caused by fall cankerworms and spring moths in the beautiful Somerset County area over the last two to three years, and after extensive discussions with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced the agency has committed to spraying for these pests. Metzgar notes this is a win for the area, as DCNR has recognized the urgency of the issue.

“As warmer temperatures approach, it is crucial for forest landowners and woodlot owners to start considering aerial treatments to protect trees from the devastating effects of Lymantria dispar dispar (spring moths) and fall cankerworms,” said Metzgar. “These pests pose a significant threat to our forests, having already destroyed millions of trees.”

In response to this crisis, Metzgar has championed the effort to create a comprehensive plan to assist landowners. This includes lining up a list of trusted aerial applicators, providing a suppression guide, and coordinating with expert foresters to help landowners with the planning and treatment process.

Key Information for Landowners:

Eggs: Be on the lookout for the light tan eggs laid by female moths between June and July. These eggs can contain between 100 to 1,500 individual eggs and are typically found on trees, rocks and other surfaces.
Treatment Window: The critical period for treatment is during the small caterpillar stage in May. This is when treatment is most effective.
Recommended Treatments: Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) and Tebufenozide (Mimic) are the most commonly used treatments for these pests.
Urgency: Due to a limited number of applicators and a narrow treatment window, it's important to schedule services as soon as possible.

“These destructive worms have already cost landowners thousands of dollars in efforts to protect their properties,” said Metzgar. “Now, thanks to DCNR's involvement, landowners may have more affordable options, as well as the guidance and support they need. This program allows private landowners to contact sprayers and have their land treated in conjunction with DCNR’s spray program.

“Together, we can protect our forests and preserve the natural beauty of our area for future generations.”
